"Let us, for instance, take the choleric person, who has a strong firm center in his inner being. If the ego predominates, the person will assert himself against all outer oppositions; he wants to be in evidence. This ego is the restrainer. Those pictures are consciousness-pictures. The physical body is formed according to its etheric body, the etheric body according to its astral body... Choleric persons appear as a rule as if growth had been retarded. [short] Thereby he reveals clearly that the other members of his being have been held back by the excess of ego. Not the astral body with its forming capacity is the predominant member, but the ego rules, the restrainer, the limiter of the formative forces. Hence we see as a rule in those who are preeminently men of strong will, where the ego restrains the free formative force of the astral body, a small compact figure. Take another classical example of the choleric: Napoleon, the “little General,” who remained so small because the ego held back the other members of his being. There you have the type of the retarded growth of the choleric. There you can see how this force of the ego works out of the spirit, so that the innermost being is manifest in the outer form.

MotherStyles: Using Personality Type to Discover Your Parenting StrengthsBy Janet Penley, Diane Eble

"An antidote to our stressed-out mother culture, MotherStyles validates the notion that good mothering comes in many styles and explains how understanding how you most often react to your child and why is the most important step toward working through areas that have long given you trouble. Drawing on the personality type-theory popularized by the Myers-Briggs(r) Type Indicator and author Janet Penley's more than eighteen years of working with mothers, MotherStyles explains the combinations of traits that make up sixteen distinct mothering approaches. From the "Tuned-In Mother," the "Heart-to-Heart Mother," and the "Kids 'r' Fun Mother" to the "Responsibility Mother" and the "Independence Mother," Penley helps readers identify which style reflects her own strengths, struggles, and needs and, from there, offers unique and concrete ideas for ways to overcome the parenting challenges inherent to each type. Guiding mothers to an understanding of how type affects parent-child interactions and family dynamics,MotherStyles will help moms everywhere to recharge their batteries, and find success in this most important of roles."   http://www.motherstyles.com/

Nurture the Nature: Understanding and Supporting Your Child's Unique Core PersonalityBy Michael Gurian

"Family therapist Gurian (The Wonder of Girls) approaches his nature-based theme from a slightly different angle in his latest work, urging parents to buck "social trends parenting" and make decisions based on the core personality of their individual child. A researcher of brain science and gender differences, Gurian believes that much of a child's behavior is inborn from the start. But Gurian sees a disturbing trend in parents' increasing willingness to disregard their own instincts, letting media and society-driven fads dictate the way they raise their kids. In his own "clinical detective work," he has found that children are becoming bogged down by activity overload and the "material anxiety" that arises from trying to keep up with the latest designer fads or electronic gadgets. Gurian presents an in-depth, chapter-by-chapter analysis of child development, beginning at infancy and ending in early adulthood. Gurian's presentation is comprehensive and peppered with fascinating facts (i.e., how pheromones of biological fathers affect the onset of girls' puberty or how parts of a toddler's brain actually swell during a tantrum). The author's new text will help parents begin, in the tradition of Maria Montessori, to "follow the child," rather than adapt their kids to a contemporary one-size-fits-all mold. (May)"

  • Did you know that using the four temperaments (or types) to understand children goes back as far as Steiner of Waldorf?

Immanuel Kant (1724–1804), Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925), Alfred Adler (1879–1937), Erich Adickes (1866–1925), Eduard Spranger (1914), Ernst Kretschmer(1920), and Erich Fromm (1947) all theorized on the four temperaments (with different names) and greatly shaped our modern theories of temperament.

Maybe each type has more than one typical look?

Here I am incorporating the original Greek association with the temperaments and the various sources of Typing Systems regarding facial shape.  The point is that typing cannot be made on face shape alone:
    • since if your face is oval, you could possibly be any of the types;
    • if your face is round that doesn't only mean you're Type 1 but Type 2 should also be ruled out or considered (this is the biggest difference between the Greek's and most modern Typing);
    • the angular face shapes of triangular (wider at the chin, Type 3) and heart (wider at the forehead, usually Type 1) are probably the most singular.

Two Types of Sanguines, wait Three?
Venusian Sanguines have oval faces, unless they are
the Jovial subtype with acorn face shape (or heart).
Caygill and other Typing systems on say Sanguines have round faces
(except Riter's Science of Personal Dress)

Click for these DYT T1 Examples:

Sanguine (Air): balanced, aesthetic, pleasing, oval or egg shaped face, tapering delicate chin mouth and lips, eyes tend to be brown, almond shaped, hair is usually or chestnut brown, Venusian facial type (associated with Libra).  Jovial (Jupiter) subtype can be acorn shaped face, with large forehead and upper face, but small tapering cheeks, chin, mouth and lower face, short and compressed nose, but can also be angular and prominent, like a bird's beak, eyebrows are full and hair is curly or wavy.  Eyes usually brown according to Greek's, but blue according to Steiner.  Lively and dancing eyes.
Build is slender, elegant, well balanced.  Walks on toes, dancing like a butterfly.  Mobile, expressive face.  New and colorful clothing.  (according to Steiner).

    Two Types of Phlegmatics
Phlegmatics have round faces according to Greek's
(as well as Riter's Science of Personal Dress)
oval according to other Typing systems.

Joni Mitchell, Sybil Leek, round faced Phlegmatics

    Laura Bush, oval faced Phlegmatic

Click for these DYT T2 Examples:
    • Wait a minute, doesn't she have a round face? Type 2 Anne
    • Here's actual a DYT T2 makeover of a woman with a round shaped face: Andrea

Phlegmatic (Water): round face, large watery eyes, often blue or gray, thick luxuriant lashes, cheeks are full and may be dimpled, small pug nose or button shaped nose, chin is round and possibly receding or double, facial hair and eyebrows are usually light/sparse, hairline is often high and forehead prominent (associated with Cancer, to a lesser extent Pisces).  Eyes are usually blue, sleepy often closed.

Build is big, fleshy, rotund, static indifferent body. Timid manner.  Loose jointed
plodding, ambling like a steamroller, shambling.  Conservative clothing  (according to Steiner).

*Scorpio due to its classical Mars rulership is a mixture of Phlegmatic and Choleric in facial type.

    Two Types of Cholerics
Most Cholerics have a triangular face shape,
unless they are the Apollian subtype with oval.

Click for these DYT T3 Examples:

Choleric (Fire) : triangular (narrow forehead, broad angular jaw), jutting chin, pointed prominent nose, high prominent cheekbones, arched eyebrows, ruddy or reddish complexion (associated with Mars). Apollonic subtype can have oval face, with long prominent aquiline nose, eyes are big an prominent, wavy brilliant lighter hair (associated with Leo).  Mixed eye colors, energetic and active.
Build is bullnecked, upright, short legs, husky.  Walk is firm, heels dig into ground with each step. Wears individual and outstanding clothes.  Chiseled facial features.
     (according to Steiner).

    Two Types of Melancholics
Melancholics have square or rectangular faces (or elongated ovals).
Mercurial subtypes have elongated ovals and long thin noses.
Saturnine subtypes have a more prominent aquiline nose
and the back of their head may be flat.
Carrie Fisher and Jackie O. Melancholics

Is Demi a Melancholic since her face is square?
Is Gwyneth with her oblong face?

Simone Sigoret and Sigourney Weaver, Melancholics

Click for these DYT T4 Examples:

Melancholic (Earth): square or rectangular face shape, well developed bone structure, well nourished appearance (associated with Taurus).  Mercurial subtype has nervous temperament, elongated oval face shape, perenially youthful appearance, nose is long and thin, eyes are large sparkling and dark, hair is wiry or wavy (associated with Gemini, and Virgo). Saturnine subtype may look pasty or sallow, prominent aquiline nose, prominent chin, back of the head may be flat, chin may be tucked down (associated with Capricorn).  Mixed Eye types, dull, tragic and mournful.

Build is tall, bow headed, bony.  Walk is slow with a drooping, sliding gait.  Wears dark, drab solid colors, difficult to please (according to Steiner).

    Full Moon Ravings

So yesterday was the full moon in Libra, which is supposed to be about harmony.  I felt anything but.  I've been voraciously reviewing the Greek Temperaments, especially as discussed by Steiner (of Waldorf and Anthroposophy). I'm fairly certain that I am far more Melancholic than Phlegmatic, and possibly secondarily Choleric!  I told him husband that night, this makes me a somewhat miserable person!  I have tried to hide this my whole life.  I have a lot of shame about how incredibly sensitive I am, how often I am in emotional distress or pain, or physical sensitivity, or picking up on others emotions, etc.  But I now realize I come by it honestly.  I also found out in the Michael Teachings Soul Overeleaves reading that I got, that my chief feature in this life is self-deprication.  My karma is about working through whether I'm a worthy person at all.  A Melancholic desperately hopes they are better than others in some way that gives them distinction, but then hopelessly fears they are worse than everyone, and thus inadequate.  It is what we do.  I don't know if that has anything to do with the Type 4 personality or not.  I'm starting to wonder if the Temperaments really correlate fully.  It doesn't matter.

"Melancholics should not close their eyes to life's pain, but rather seek it out; through compassion they redirect their suffering outward toward appropriate objects and events. "

I do know that I cannot dress T2 nor Soft Summer.  I just won't.  I am much happier considering myself T4/3, which is essentially a softened winter. Also, I posted a pic on FB with my hair red now and my new blue coat and it got more likes than any T2 profile pic I had over the last year or so.

    Stella McCartney

Stella McCartney is an amazing designer!
Now let's look at her face and then her personality.

On first glance, I thought she obviously has a round face.  So that's probably Sanguine, T1, Air... But as you look at more pics of her, you also have to consider whether her face is square.

Here's how complex we are... my chart

So every sign and planet, and even the four axis points all can be correlated to the temperaments.

So I have marked as many of these correlations as I could figure out on my chart.  Many astrologers would weight these factors differently, but a straight count reveals: 8 Phlegmatic (Water, T2), 7 Choleric (Fire, T3), 3 Melancholic (Earth, T4) and 2 Sanguine (Air, T1).  But one way you could also emphasize important aspects would be to consider the part of the chart responsible for appearance.  Not only is my Ascendant Sagittarius (which is Fire, Choleric T3), I have three planets conjunct my Ascendant (also Choleric).  These planets are also in a TSquare, conflicting with Melancholic and Phlegmatic aspects of myself.  I also have a Phlegmatic Grand Trine.  So people probably feel that very strong Water energy (I have all 3 water signs!), unless I am triggered by my Choleric planets, which are all emotional, Moon is feelings, Mars is anger and Venus is compassion.

    Which factor comes first?

I did a series of polyvores about incorporating your secondary energies.  They were based on the idea that you stick to your palette (from the four Types), but incorporate 2 or 3 of the other design elements (like design lines, fabrication, texture, shapes, etc.) from your secondary.  But what if it's the other direction, meaning what if you stick with another factor and vary the color? perhaps using the color from your 12 season palette?

    Here's and example...
Let's say you are a dominant Type/Tone 4 with a secondary 3, here was my polyvore showing generally the black and white and bold colors palette of T4, with the angular design lines of T3.  (If I were to do this over again, I might also incorporate more texture, but that's besides the point).

What if another choice would be to use the dominant T4 structure and design lines, but warm the color palette, essentially what I show here (though labelled 3/4)?

Personality shows in the tone of your voice, in the energy you convey.  You can convey your personality with various elements, not only color, but also chroma, fabrication, design lines, texture and pattern.  Your personality may be analyzed by your facial structure, as in face reading.  It also could be typed with various quizzes.  You have to decide which percent comes from which, and how much you want to highlight.

    Green eyes might be choleric

OMG, my eyes are choleric! "The mixed type of iris, midway between the hematogenic and the lymphatic, is most closely associated with the Choleric temperament. The texture is also mixed, with alternating dense and loose patches of fibers.
According to iridologists, there are only two basic kinds of iris colors - the brown - hazel hematogenic and the blue - gray lymphatic. Those of a Choleric temperament often have green eyes, but upon closer examination, this is shown to be nothing more than blue or gray mixed with yellow discolorations. Greek Facial Diagnosis

On the four humors related to facial shape by the Greeks:

Most Cholerics have a triangular face shape,
unless they are the Apollian subtype with oval.

Choleric (Fire) : triangular (narrow forehead, broad angular jaw), jutting chin, pointed prominent nose, high prominent cheekbones, arched eyebrows, ruddy or reddish complexion (associated with Mars). Apollonic subtype can have oval face, with long prominent aquiline nose, eyes are big an prominent, wavy brilliant lighter hair (associated with Leo).

Venusian Sanguines have oval faces, unless they are
the Jovial subtype with acorn face shape (or heart).

"The Sanguine iris type is called hematogenic by iridologists.  The iris color is usually brown or hazel, and its fibers tightly or densely woven; as the Sanguine is considered to be the most balanced and equable of temperaments in Greek Medicine, so the densely woven hematogenic type is considered to be the most desirable by iridologists.  "

Melancholics have square or rectangular faces.
Mercurial subtypes have elongated ovals and long thin noses.
Saturnine subtypes have a more prominent aquiline nose
and the back of their head may be flat.

"In my opinion, the Melancholic temperament also usually corresponds to the mixed iris type.  Dark black or brown spots or discolorations indicate deposits of black bile or charred, oxidized forms of black or yellow bile.  Nervous stress rings, mentioned earlier under the Sanguine iris type, are another Melancholic sign."

Phlegmatics have round faces (in this system).

Joni Mitchell, Liza Minelli, Sybil Leek

Phlegmatic (Water): round face, large watery eyes, often blue or gray, thick luxuriant lashes, cheeks are full and may be dimpled, small pug nose or button shaped nose, chin is round and possibly receding or double, facial hair and eyebrows are usually light/sparse, hairline is often high and forehead prominent (associated with Cancer, to a lesser extent Pisces). "The lymphatic iris type is characterized by light, airy, loosely woven iris fibers, reflecting the generally loose, lax tone of the muscles, organs and tissues in those of a Phlegmatic temperament.  The color of the lymphatic iris is usually blue or gray. "

*Scorpio due to its classical Mars rulership is a mixture of Phlegmatic and Choleric in facial type.
